The Stephen Lawrence Gallery aims to promote diversity in the representation of visual cultures through mainly curated group exhibitions featuring contemporary visual practitioners from a wide range of disciplines, including artists, designers, and architects
.
Conferences and seminars are organised in association with exhibitions at the gallery, which also hosts end of year student shows. In addition, the gallery has an outreach role within southeast London.
The gallery stages six curated exhibitions each year, covering a variety of approaches within a selected subject area. Recent gallery programs include ‘Borders and Identities’ (2007-8), which looked at ideas of self and society; and ‘Seeing Ourselves’ (2008-9), where exhibitions such as ‘Covering Conflict’ and ‘Being British’, examined the role of the image in the representative process.
